Daughter of The King

Mark 5:25-34 says,

“Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”

Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”

But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”

And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

This is a remarkable story.

You need to understand the cultural nuances to fully appreciate what takes place here.

This woman has been bleeding for twelve years! Blood is considered unclean. This woman, according to Jewish custom, could not be in public while bleeding. If she did go out in public, she had to yell out, “Unclean! Unclean!” to let people know to get out of the way so they wouldn’t touch her.

She had used up all her resources to get healed and had gotten worse. Can you imagine her mental state at this time? She can’t live in community, she can’t hang out with her friends. She had to make a declaration over herself of being unclean.

But Jesus does something so amazing, so powerful. The very first thing He speaks to is not her problem, but he speaks to her identity. He says, “Daughter, your faith has made you well.”

Jesus establishes her identity as a daughter.

This is so precious! Suddenly, this woman who was not even allowed to be around people, is instantly identified in the family of God. That is God’s love in action.

She now belongs, she is loved and accepted.

In the world, we gain acceptance from people by the things we accomplish, thus finding our identity in what we do. This is not the way of the kingdom. In the kingdom of God, we are accepted and loved no matter what.

Romans 8:16–17 says, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.”

Being daughters is an incredible honor. We have not only been saved from eternal separation from God, but we have been adopted into the family of God.

As we join this family, all that belongs to God belongs to us. Everything Jesus paid for on the cross is fully available to us.

You are a precious daughter!
